Filming Brighton Marathon

Filming Brighton Marathon

It’s not just TV adverts, corporate videos and online films that our production team works on.

We’ve been lucky enough to spend the last year and a half working with the guys behind the Brighton Marathon- The Grounded Events Company. Started in 2010 the Brighton Marathon has gone from strength to strength and within 5 short years has become the second largest marathon in the UK behind the London Marathon.

The team behind the event are very forward thinking and have embraced online video content- understanding the power it has when used with social media. It’s been great fun working with them to develop and deliver a dynamic video production strategy.

They approached us in late 2014 to start looking at the video content they had and prepare new promotional films for the 2015 marathon weekend. This ranged from videos for runners outlining the course and what they could expect, through to inspirational films and videos aimed at sponsors and charities.

As well as putting together the video content for online and marketing use, our background in television meant we were able to provide camera crews and advice for the main TV broadcast, which went out on Channel 4. We provided 8 camera operators across the weekend who were integral to delivering the programme.

The marathon weekend was an amazing experience- the first time we’ve been involved in a major sporting event outside of London. With 150,000 spectators and glorious sunshine the event was a great success. It’s also a logistical beast as it literally shuts down Brighton city centre and many roads in and out of town for the day.

After the event we provided more video content including a highlights film which summarised the weekend.

Post event, the feedback we got from the team was that they loved working with us because of our flexibility and ability to understand them and their unique requirements.

One of our particular successes was the pre-event Inspirational Video. This was released a few weeks before race day and was designed to get runners excited about the event. It had a huge success on the Brighton Marathon facebook page- being watched a total of 23,000 times in just a couple of days and generating over 400 shares and 400 plus likes / comments. This really shows the power of video when used as part of a social media campaign. One of our pre-2016 videos has recently had 71,000 views!

We’re already working with the team on the content for the 2016 marathon and looking forward to working with them on some exciting non-marathon events in London and across the UK.

The race director was also kind enough to write us a testimonial which we’ve included below:

“We recently approached Picture Book Films and asked them to produce the promotional and online video content for the 2015 Brighton Marathon."

We were impressed with how quickly they got to grips with our ethos and approach, and their working practices allowed us to create fresh ideas and input energy to the way we showcase our events."

“The videos they produced exceeded all our expectations and generated excitement and anticipation when used as part of our promotional campaign - exactly the reaction we were hoping for! Our pre-event video, for example, was viewed over 22,000 times via Facebook."

“We can't recommend Picture Book Films highly enough and are looking forward to building a strong relationship with them for the 2016 marathon and beyond!”
